9/12/2007 Dental Update

Well the dentist called and have now informed us that our "portion" of Olivia's surgery is now $5,300. (up from the $4,300 they originally estimated) I am just having a stressful day, I just don't know how we will cover that. It is hard enough right now to get through the day to day chores with a child in a body cast, a husband that works out of town 5 days a week, and a house that we are still trying to finish remodeling so we can sell and move to Cedar City, so we can be with "daddy". Not to mention I also TRY and work from home, which is hard lately with Olivia in her condition, and needing help with everything. (and unable to go to school, etc.)
This is one of those days that I am just overwhelmed with it all. If anyone knows of any organizations that will help with dental work, please, please let me know. Since Olivia is now complaining of pain we can't delay her dental surgery, yet I just don't see how we can get that much money in less then two weeks. The hospital will let us make payments, but the rest has to be paid up front. The dental work is over $3,000 ($2,000 of which we will need to cover), the hospital bill is another $2,500 and the anesthesiologist is another $800.
We tried to get grants for Olivia's adoption, but were unable to get one since we are "Mormon", and apparently not Christian to the agencies that award the grants. So I seriously doubt that we will be able to get any assistance with this bill either.
But we are open to ANY suggestions that anyone has, or possibly any programs that are out there that I am not aware of.

Sharol, have you talked to your bishop? The church might be able to help.

Sharol .. you are an inspiration to every adoptive (pre and post) parent. Your family is beautiful and obviously filled with love.
Seems to me that a dentist / doctor should be willing to donate his services or at least heavily discount it in exchange for a human interest press release. Drs. in general spend a small fortune annually to advertise their services. A positive press release could have a positive effect on his practice for many years to come. It's a story the public would not soon forget especially as your daughter has already gone through so much in her few years. Although you'd have to open your family up to the public it maybe a way to get some free dental / health work donated and even some donations to pay for co-pays and perhaps schooling and or future treatments needed. Might be worth talking to several dentists as well. 2nd and even 3rd opinions are not uncommon.
Good Luck to you all.

You might try a Shriner's hospital - some of them do some dental (I think). You also might try contacting the dental association in your state - they might have some suggestions (or know of someplace that would do it for less). Hope that helps!

Best,
Alaina

Oh, I see you have been working with Shriners - sorry. :) We have a son from Kaz with a cleft palate and lip which he just had the 1st surgery for at the Chicago Shriners.

Hay Sharol, You may have already figured a way out, but my friend is also Mormon and needed help. A neibor from a Christian church got her help, but she had to attend on of there services a month at their church. She goes there every Sunday before her Ward meets. Just a suggestion for you. May help may not or you may not be interested at all. Take care and as always you are in my thoughts and prayers everyday. DK
